What is it?
Virtualization is not to be mistaken with Cloud Computing—although it resemblance a similar concept. In a simple term within the computing industry, virtualization refers to an act to create something in a virtual form rather than physical. The two most common types of virtualization are Hardware Virtualization and Desktop Virtualization. Other types include software, memory, storage, data, and network.

Typically, virtualization offers three important components as a disaster recovery solution. First, hardware abstraction capability. Second, by having fewer physical machines, the business can easily create an affordable replication site. Third, most server virtualization platforms have software that automatically failover when a disaster happen. It usually also allow the company to test and see if their failover plan works in reality.

Virtualization is like taking baby steps to move into the cloud. A simple virtualized data center might lead to a private cloud. The journey of moving everything to the cloud is usually slow, however, having a head start to get there is a privilege for the business to be prepared for the future.
Microsoft’s Virtual Machines
In order to accommodate high demand, Microsoft has came up with its most powerful Virtual Machine (VM) yet, with more storage and higher throughput, to run large-scale, database-driven applications in the Microsoft Azure Cloud.
The new GS-Series was surprisingly popular since their launch in January 2015. It offers up to 64TB of storage and delivers 2,000 MBs of throughput to the backend storage. The G series run on the Intel Xeon E5 v3 processors, the most powerful VM offered on Azure. It is specifically designed to run Azure’s large applications workloads. By including large amounts of storage, it eases the process of deploying the large workloads. On top of that, both G and GS-series Virtual Machines offer 20 Gbps (gigabits per second) of network Bandwidth. Not to mention its new diagnostic tool feature that allows admins to see the serial and console output, which helps troubleshooting.
Microsoft has most definitely pioneered and set the bar high for the future of virtualization.
