5 Microsoft Products to Look Out For in 2016

By | Article | No Comments

PCMAN – A year seems to be a long period of time, but not for the technology industry. Lots of new product innovations have been introduced and will be explored further more in the upcoming years.

Microsoft is predicted to have a more strategic partnerships and expansion in Europe, and to have a more Apple-like retail stores. Besides that, they are also predicted to focus more on philanthropy. With that being said, there should be Microsoft products to be expected in 2016 as well. These are some of our predictions on what to look out for:

HoloLens. Customers should expect HoloLens’ first development kits to show up in the first quarter of 2016. Microsoft is reported to have been developing its HoloLens holographic computer glasses after a year of buildup. It would still take some time before HoloLens enter the local market, however, it is still a huge step that brings hologram technology into reality.

The Surface Phone. Loyal users must have been hearing rumors on a Surface Phone being developed for a while now. It’s reported that we might be able to get to see the device in 2016. Predictions and speculations have been made towards the hardware, being similar to the Surface tablets with a metallic, simple look. It is speculated to have big screens, and may be aimed at business users who are seeking for the power of Windows 10 on a mobile device. This innovation would give so much power to Microsoft if it was really going to be launched in 2016.

The Surface Pro 5. It’s no stranger that Microsoft has excelled combining a PC and a tablet into one—the Surface Pro. Though Microsoft is marketing the Surface Pro 4 as the flagship Windows 10 device, the fifth generation should be able to fill the big shoes in front of them. It is reported that the fifth generation of the device will continue the trend of making the laptop slash tablet hybrid device even more capable. It would add more power and be less thin just as previous versions have done.

Windows 10 and Office Suite Updates. Although Windows 10 was launched just recently, Microsoft has already thought about the next major update. With the codename “Redstone”, Microsoft is planning to release a new Windows 10 update in summer 2016. The update is reported to generally expand the things that have come before in Windows 10. It would be called “Continuum”, a feature to make the user’s smartphone into a PC. The update will, for example, allow the user to take calls on their PC.

On another hand, Microsoft has updated their productivity suite, naming it “Office 2016”. They are expected to be rolling out the update to the users, consumers, and enterprise alike. Office 365 will also receive updates throughout 2016 in step with offline Office, according to Microsoft.

New Features on Xbox One. With Xbox One, Microsoft has made a major update with the video game console by adding a version of the Windows 10 operating system at the core. Xbox and PC are getting closer, and we should expect to find Windows Store app market to the Xbox One. On top of that, Cortana, the digital assistant built in to Windows 10, is expected to come to Xbox One too.

5 Cloud Predictions for 2016

By | Article | No Comments

PCMAN – It’s no secret that Cloud computing has had a successful journey and predicted to continue to grow in 2016. Below are some of the predictions regarding Cloud’s performance in the upcoming year.

Reshape. With giant vendors such as Amazon and Microsoft believed to put more pressure on the market in 2016, large IT vendors should realize that they would need to reshape themselves in order to survive. Pressure such as transforming modern enterprise IT public Cloud and flash is going to increase, which should direct vendors to move from the fringe to the data center core.

Cloud to Create Disruption. Mark Baker, the Product Manager of OpenStack stated that ‘2016 would be the year of more disruption. The convergence of Cloud, IoT and OpenSource will drive the expansion of “commoditized innovation”, rapid innovation through collaboration at commodity scale economics’.

The rise of Container-as-a-Service (CaaS). It is predicted that the deployment and use of Container-as-a-Service (CaaS) will increase in popularity. CaaS will succeed without requiring organizational changes as seen with the rise of Development and Operations (DevOps), eliminating the need to retool and reskill by refocusing on what Operations can do for Developers. Through integration of core and container technologies, CaaS would create a more circular pattern of collaboration.

Big Data. In 2016, the Cloud industry is expected to provide ready-made data analytics infrastructures to help individual sectors to overcome common problems. With big data, the Cloud is able to help the users within the data-heavy industries to quickly sift information from connected devices to determine the faults or packages are located. The data will be more democratic, being put on the palm of the employees to help them make informed decisions to drive customer engagement.

Privacy Responsibility. One can do many things with the Cloud technology—such as remotely control cloud devices such as drones. However, with that being possible to be done, it raised concerns about privacy towards Cloud monitoring and usage. Cloud vendors should put extra thoughts on Cloud security and integrity in order to deliver an optimal service. Furthermore, tighten privacy security system will not only apply on mobile devices, but also on smart home devices—since Internet of Things is being continuously developed.

5 Technology Trend Predictions in 2016

By | Article | No Comments

PCMAN – As long as curiosity, innovation, and creativity remain to occur within the technology industry, technology will always evolve. In 2015 we have witnessed amazing innovations happened within the field, which some may be carried on to be explored further more in 2016.

Internet of Things and Big Data Analytics
The Internet of Things (IoT) has gone out of its experiment lab, and being tested in real environments. Google and Nest have released its 3rd generation of its connected homes aspirations. We can only expect that IoT will only expand in 2016.

Meanwhile, Big Data Analytics have been serving as an important aspect for companies such as Uber and Ola cabs to predict the geographical nature of demand for a cab. When being applied to a specific situation, big data analytics will generate insights, which will result in beneficial apps that will improve our lives.

Mobile Payments

We have been bombarded by mobile payments services such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay. Besides those software giants, there are also plenty of software options that serve as mobile payments as well. This shows the rapid growth of the technology, which will remain gradual in the next few years to come.

Processors and Mobile Computing

A lot of companies have released new product generations such as Intel with its 6th generation Skylake series of processors for desktop and mobile systems; Intel with its Core M processor lineup; Qualcomm’s new launches; MediaTekHelio new processors; and other releases. Users may expect more releases from Qualcomm, Samsung, and other giant tech companies in the coming year.

Virtual Reality

It was mentioned several times that virtual reality is going to change the world in 2016. Key players have the objective of bringing this tech into our homes to create a much more immersive experience than mere two-dimensional viewing. From gaming, entertainment, healthcare, to communications, virtual reality will revolutionize how users perceive things.

Microsoft Back in Style

Microsoft has successfully blew everyone’s imagination when they demonstrated the HoloLens, Continuum, and other possibilities that users may perform with their Windows 10. They also introduced several products such as Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book, which have also changed the way customers perceive their brand. Their transformational journey has gotten itself closer to the open source community, on top of using iOS and Android devices at product demonstrations. Microsoft back in style should definitely expect a warm welcome in 2016.

4 Useful Cloud Computing Features

By | Article | No Comments

PCMAN – Technology has not stopped evolving throughout the years, and it is less likely to stop. Innovative companies kept on gathering new ideas, creating and developing new technologies to make our lives a little less hard and much more productive.

Cloud computing is one of the newly introduced technology that has been gaining lots of attention—perhaps because it’s supported by giant tech companies such as Microsoft who has been campaigning its  “cloud-first, mobile-first” movement. However, since it’s still considered as a relatively new concept, users need to be educated and informed with the benefits that they could get by using the Cloud.

On-Demand Functionality

Being in the Cloud means information does not necessarily need to be stored in a physical form. By not having a physical form, it means that the business is offered an on-demand capability to ensure that they can access their information at their convenience. With the right cloud computing service, businesses can check on the services, and make changes directly via the control panel. Businesses may also add or delete the users and storage networks to their cloud platform. This on-demand capability has given businesses more control in accessing and maintaining their information.

Improved Accessibility

With the increasing numbers of devices, accessing data using different devices simultaneously has become something to be considered for application and software developers. Cloud computing enables user to access their data over different devices with a single access point; operate at different hours; and finally enhance their productivity. This broad accessibility allows public, private, and hybrid clouds.

Increased Flexibility and Elasticity

Nowadays, changes happen more frequently and technology services need to be able to cater to it quickly. With Cloud’s flexibility, it helps website and applications that are hosted on the cloud to adapt to the change faster, and reallocate the resources accordingly. Users will less likely experience downtime when they use Cloud instead of a local host. The Cloud will adjust itself according to the incoming traffic, and it should be used by businesses to ensure constancy in the changing environment.

Measured Service

Last but definitely not least, users only pay what they use with the Cloud. Everything is measured—from the storage level, bandwidth, to the number of user accounts that the business is using—payment is accounted to the service that are being used. The users will receive the benefit of transparency in terms of resources appointed for monitoring and controlling the cloud environment.

Adobe and Microsoft: Evolution on Web Presentations

By | Article | No Comments

PCMAN – PowerPoint has been around for quite some time, and has been helping people creating presentations conveniently. However, with the design and technology trends that keep on evolving, Adobe and Microsoft has created tools for presentations that emphasize easier creation and more Web-savvy output.

PowerPoint has evolved in their 25 years journey, beginning from the idea of combining text and images together into a narrative, up to the point where adding animation, videos and other media becomes necessary. It has served in many boardrooms, offices, and conferences dutifully around the globe. However, the Web has proved itself as a repository for its output, as well as competition that merges the slide show with modern, parallax-infused Web design.

Prezi, is most likely PowerPoint’s biggest competition to date, with various features that allow individuals to create Web stories on scrolling “canvasses”. Which is why both Adobe and Microsoft has created a similar output to maintain their spots on the list of best presentation creation tools.

Microsoft Sway

This original application is branded as part of Office, and it has been one of the first proper applications that came out of Microsoft since its “cloud-first, mobile-first” approach began. The idea of Sway is to create and share interactive reports, presentations, personal stories, newsletters, and other forms. Quick and easy to add contents to presentations, it even has an interactive content available to attach. From video to interactive chart, Sway allows the users to bring their presentations to life.

Sway also provides searches suggestions to help the user find relevant images, videos, tweets, and other content to drag and drop right in to their creation. And in terms of design and formatting, Sway has a built-in design engine that will instantly transform the presentations with great designs. On top of that, Microsoft has made it very easy for users to share a Sway with family, friends, classmates, coworkers, without singing up or downloading additional software.

Adobe Slate

This software is a content-authoring mashup that streamlines story creation by having the editing take place directly on its themes. The basic idea for Adobe Slate is to create, customize, and share people’s story in few easy steps and clicks.

Adobe Slate provides professional-grade designs featuring beautiful fonts and magazine-style layouts to eliminate the design and formatting hassle that most users usually have to deal with. From school newsletter, photo essay, to a class project, people have been using Adobe Slate to create a more advanced presentation.

5 Useful Information on Microsoft Windows 10 Upgrade

By | Article | No Comments

PCMAN – Reportedly, more than 75 million people have now upgraded to Windows 10, the most used Windows update service. However, some of the users may still have some questions about installations, product keys, downgrading, and more. Below are some of the useful information to minimize the confusions:

Download the Upgrade

Users can download the upgrade from the Download Windows 10 page, store the files, and install it whenever it is the most convenient for them. Microsoft provides a media creation tool, which allows the users to install the download file on a blank USB memory stick, or burn it into a DVD. This feature enables the user to download the file on one PC to upgrade a different PC. Since Windows 10 is continuously updated, it would be wise to download the upgrade at the time one has planned to use it. Users have until July 2016 to install the free upgrade.

Third-party Upgraders

One may not have access to a Microsoft store, thus resulting in independent specialist to installing their Windows 10 update. There is no restriction on who have the right to upgrade the operating system; however, one should always do data back up before upgrading their device. A good installer will make sure that non-Microsoft anti-malware software that might cause problems with the upgrade will be uninstalled, and guarantee that Windows 10 upgrade will be activated and run smoothly.

Product Key

When the user took the free upgrade via Windows Update, the product key will most likely be YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7 for the Home version, or VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T for Pro. The way Windows 10 upgrade works is it creates a hash number based on the user’s hardware and stores it against the user’s Microsoft Account (MSA) when being installed. Once it has done that, users are able to do a re-installation, and their PC will authenticate automatically. If the user is asked for a product key, they may click on “Skip” and it should be able to authenticate itself.

Files, Movies and Programs

Many users are worried that their files on the Windows 7 disk drive will be deleted or lost during the update. However, if they do an “in place” upgrade via Windows Update, everything should stay safely in their own place. Any missing files should be stored on the hard drive in a folder called “windows.old”. Nonetheless, it is always safer to backup your files to anticipate when things go wrong during the installation.

Downgrade

It’s quite common for users to have complications after they just upgraded their PC. If you need to do so, with Windows 10 upgrade, users can upgrade and downgrade as often as they like, with a 30 days time limit to do so. Simply run the Settings app, go to Update and Security, and click on Recovery.

How HP is using Star Wars to Reinvent Their Brand

By | Article | No Comments

PCMAN – With the much-anticipated Star Wars seventh movie, Force Awakens, finally landing in theaters, an increased number of brands have been incorporating themselves into the iconic film franchise—surprisingly including HP.

Its latest ads featuring a Star Wars theme began with a young man in his garage, except instead of computing’s future, he’s got something more immediate in mind. He gathered spare parts, work night and day, until it becomes clear he’s building a life-size R2D2 replica. HP Inc. determined the power of the commercial as it shows what the droid is used for.

Hewlett-Packard split into two separate companies back in November 2015, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, which covers industrial-grade server computers, networking equipment, software and services; and HP Inc., which focuses more on the consumer-facing PC and printing business. This Star Wars-themed ad has successfully set the bar, as it was HP Inc.’s first brand campaign after the big split. Its chief marketing officer Antonio Lucio claims that HP’s tagline “Keep Reinventing” should be acknowledge much more than a slogan, but a mission for the company to remain relevant.

The Heart and The Brain

One of the main reason why Star Wars was picked as the ads theme was to make it as memorable and identified with the brand as much as possible. It supports HP’s decision to use technology and Star Wars as a vehicle for emotion.

Lucio claimed that he wanted to bring back the heart into the brand since HP seemed to resemblance more of the brain. Lucio stated that when the heart commits, the brain can only follow—thus bringing back an emotional connection to the HP brand became a priority.

“Keep Reinventing”

The big split may be viewed differently by different group of people—for investors, executives, employees, and consumers. For Lucio, the split is an opportunity to reframe what the brand stands for in the context of its new business reality. The first question raised by Lucio was how much do the team want to incorporate the rich history and legacy of HP into their new identity. Which is why the first step that Lucio took was to create a new vision and mission statement.

In order to do that, they surveyed more than 10,000 employees to help reinventing HP. History that they wanted to keep were set aside from the ones they want to leave behind.

Secondly, they strongly see “Keep Reinventing” not just as a slogan, but as a commitment that reflects how HP works, behave, and perform. It has to reflect the ethos, consumer truth, and company truth that target the reinvention of technology to make life better.

Bottom line, Lucio has embraced the culture, aligned everyone under one vision and mission, and stroked a chord both externally and internally. He made sure that the brand comes to life with meaningful impact on the consumers and employees around the world.

Linux on Microsoft Azure

By | Article | No Comments

PCMAN – Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, Azure, has been gaining lots of attention since Microsoft decided to focus on migrating its user to the cloud. Often referred as platform or infrastructure as a service (PaaS or Iaas), Azure enables the user to quickly build, deploy, and manage cloud applications, integrating those applications with their existing IT environment. Microsoft Azure stands along with the other biggest players within the industry—Amazon AWS, Google, and IBM.

With its recent clean start with Red Hat, Azure has increased its Linux supports, with features including a command-line interface, MySQL clustering, LAMP stack, and Docker containers. Azure provides greater choice and flexibility, which created a smoother bridge for developers and administrators who use both Windows and Linux.

Get Started with Linux on Azure

Microsoft has prepared lots of support in guiding their users to a complex collection of tools and services that can sometimes be overwhelming for beginners. They documented tutorials and training certification on its website for users to get started with Linux on Azure. The Introduction to Linux on Azure page provides an overview of some aspects of using Linux virtual machines in the Azure cloud. Other supporting documents such as the tutorial for creating a virtual machine can also be found on Microsoft’s website.

Besides that, users are given the flexibility of deploying many open source and community-driven software solutions on Azure. For an example, user can choose from Linux distros like Ubuntu and SUSE, and automation tools like Chef and Puppet.

Other additional services such as analytics, computing, database, mobile, networking, storage, and web are also offered as a part of Linux on Azure services. From automatic patching and updates, built-in load balancing, to the ability to scale applications and resources quickly, users can shrink or expand their resources as needed.

Docker on Linux for Azure

Docker Container is a revolutionary micro-service delivery for reliable software moving execution from a dev-test environment to a production environment. Docker allows the user to package an application with all of its dependencies into a standardized unit, regardless the environment. Docker is one of the most popular virtualization approaches that uses Linux containers rather than virtual machines as a way of isolating data and computing on shared resources.

More Linux Resources for Azure

Users are able to download preconfigured software images for Linux or Windows server VMs on a wide range of Azure-endorsed Linux distributions—including Ubuntu, SUSE, openSUSE, CentOS, and CoreOS. On top of that, a community managed repository of Linux and FreeBSD virtual machines, VM Depot, offers more images that one might not find in other platforms.

Azure DevTest Labs, a new Azure service, provides resources for DevOps teams to develop, deploy, and test software. It also lets users easily create development and test environments with reusable templates to facilitate a smooth integration and delivery.

With its growing support for Linux, Microsoft Azure has definitely managed to be a powerful array of service to deploy and manage applications in the cloud with increased choice and flexibility.

5 Steps to Successfully Utilize Skype for Business

By | Article | No Comments

PCMAN – More than often, business products offer a desirable promise of returns on investment (ROI) without maximizing its services, thus resulting in unsatisfied customers. Employees are hesitant to use a particular product when the quality doesn’t meet expectations, or when they are lacking of information on ways to operate the product.

Having its stable version released just recently, Skype for Business still has a long way to go to provide a satisfying experience for its users. Being a new product, it would be useful for organizations to receive assistance for deploying Skype for Business successfully. And being a product for communications—an important asset to a company—has set the bar even higher and more critical.

Based on various researches, a typical successful deployment in both small and large projects would have each broken down into phases, with lessons learned from one phase, applied to the next. Depending on the particular goals and niches being addressed, the number of phases can vary from one company to the other. The most common pattern is the deployment is aligned to the critical areas of the project: considerations before one begins, installation, and sustainability within activity and normal usage.

Skype for Business can be broken down into five phases:

1. Scope. Desired business outcomes are critically important for companies to define because it will shape the business pathway along the journey. Based on what Skype offers, you may already been informed about its benefits, strengths and weaknesses towards your company. Another list of things to consider are: Which business scenarios will most benefit from Skype for Business; Which specific groups, sites, or regions would benefit from early access to Skype for Business; Which Skype for Business features will get your company deploy, and in which order; Will your company use Skype for Business for audio and Web conferencing, or video; and if you will connect Skype for Business to an existing UC/VoIP/PBX/room-based video conferencing systems.

These considerations will help you determine whether your business will benefit from Skype for Business or not.

2. Proof of Concept (PoC). Companies need to evaluate if they are ready to run Skype for Business by testing the network infrastructure. A few considerations are: Does your company have the tools and resources to set up a new environment; Is the test environment scalable to test larger or more complex deployments; what are the success criteria for the PoC; and how these criteria will be expanded for the pilot and subsequent roll-out phases.

3. Pilot. Companies need to validate Skype for Business, resources, and rollout plans with the users to anticipate broad rollout. Remember to have clients loaded on actual desktops, users ready for testing phase, and put in place a system for iterative feedback surveys.

4. Enterprise Rollout. An important question to start with: Is the rollout plan scalable for an enterprise-wide implementation? By learning and applying lessons from the pilot phase, it will prepare your business to launch Skype for Business across initial locations, departments and user groups.

5. Run State. This is the phase to focus on user experience to drive business consumption. Companies should be able to properly train the users, and provide tools and solutions when problems arise. By doing this, you will complete the five phases of successfully utilizing Skype for Business.
